About the New Zealand Procurement Excellence Survey & Ecosystem Study

Our commitment to creating a long-term, data-driven view of procurement in Aotearoa, governed by a rigorous and ethical research framework.

Our Vision & Purpose

This study was established by New Zealand Procurement Excellence Forum (NZPEF) with a single, clear vision: To create a long-term view of the New Zealand procurement ecosystem, tracking its evolution, health, and capability trends to inform national strategy, organisational improvement, and professional development.

We aim to move beyond single snapshots to build a rich, longitudinal dataset that provides unparalleled insight into the forces shaping our profession.

The Research Questions We're Answering

Our research is designed to answer critical questions for the ecosystem over time:

  • 1How does overall procurement capability in New Zealand change year-on-year?
  • 2What are the common traits of high-performing procurement functions?
  • 3Which factors—such as technology, team structure, or leadership—have the most significant impact on performance?
  • 4How do the perspectives of procurement professionals, internal stakeholders, and suppliers align or differ?
  • 5What are the emerging trends that will shape the future of the profession in New Zealand?

Our Methodology: A Longitudinal Open Cohort

This study uses a Longitudinal Open Cohort design. This academic approach provides two key benefits:

Tracking the "Stayers"

We can follow the journey of consistent participants over many years, allowing us to model how procurement maturity develops over time.

Welcoming the "Joiners"

By allowing new organisations to join at any time, we ensure our annual "State of the Ecosystem" snapshot remains fresh, relevant, and truly representative of the current New Zealand business landscape.

This dual-focus approach gives us the most accurate and comprehensive view of the ecosystem's health.

Ethical Framework & Data Governance

Trust is the currency of this research. We uphold the highest standards of data governance, guided by these core principles:

🔒 Informed Consent

All participants are provided with a clear statement on the study's purpose and how their data will be used before they begin. Participation is always voluntary.

🔐 Anonymity & Confidentiality

All individual and organisational responses are anonymised in our reporting. We only ever publish aggregated data to ensure no single participant or their organisation can be identified.

🛡️ Data Security

All data is stored on secure, encrypted servers with access strictly limited to the core, named research team.

🤝 Transparency & Reciprocity

We believe in giving back. Participants receive exclusive early access to summary reports and findings, providing them with valuable insights that benefit their own work.
